Vinyl flooring built for Hampton Roads's humidity
Barry's Carpet & Flooring has been a family-run flooring business for more than 65 years, and vinyl is the single most-requested category we sell in Hampton Roads. Living this close to the water means humidity swings, storm season, and the occasional flooded garage or first floor - conditions that a fully waterproof floor simply shrugs off. We stock luxury vinyl plank, luxury vinyl tile, and sheet vinyl for every room in your home.
We buy directly from major mills - COREtec, Mannington, Mohawk, Shaw, SolidTech, and USfloors - so you get manufacturer pricing with no middleman markup. Every quote includes a free in-home estimate, and every installer on the job is on our own payroll, not a subcontractor.

The three kinds of vinyl - which one fits your room
"Vinyl flooring" covers a few very different products. We'll match the right one to your room during the in-home consultation.
- Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) - wide, realistic plank styles, 100% waterproof, our most-requested floor for whole-home installs
- Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) - tile-format vinyl, grouted or ungrouted, popular in kitchens and baths
- Sheet vinyl - large seamless rolls, ideal for laundry rooms, mudrooms, and small baths
- Rigid waterproof cores (SPC/WPC) - the stiffest, most stable options, built for the concrete slab construction common across Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk

$250 down and $250 a month on purchases up to $10,000*

Apply for financingWhy vinyl is the floor Hampton Roads homeowners ask for first
Between the humidity, the storm season, and the low-lying streets near the Elizabeth River and the rest of the coastline, Hampton Roads throws a lot at a floor that carpet simply can't handle. Vinyl's waterproof core doesn't cup, swell, or wick moisture from underneath the way other materials can, which is exactly why it's become the default recommendation for kitchens, entryways, basements, and ground-floor living spaces here.
It also installs over almost any subfloor - poured concrete slabs in newer Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk construction, or the mixed, sometimes uneven subfloors we find in older Norfolk neighborhoods like Ghent and Larchmont. That flexibility keeps demo costs down and project timelines short, which matters if you're working around a PCS move or a tight closing date.

Professional installation from our own crew
Vinyl looks deceptively simple to install, but the details that separate a great job from a sloppy one - flat subfloors, full-perimeter expansion gaps, custom-matched stair nosings, proper transition strips - all come from craft. Our employed crews handle every step, including baseboard removal/reinstall, transitions, and tear-out and haul-away of your existing floor.

Vinyl flooring pricing in Hampton Roads
Pricing includes vinyl, underlayment, installation by our own crew, and tear-out and haul-away of your existing floor - and if you find a lower written apples-to-apples bid, we'll beat it.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet vinyl | $3.49 - $5.49 / sq ft | Laundry rooms, small baths, mudrooms |
| Builder-grade LVP (12-20 mil) | $4.49 - $6.49 / sq ft | Rentals and starter homes |
| Mid-range LVP (20-22 mil) | $6.49 - $8.99 / sq ft | Most requested for whole-home installs |
| Premium LVP / LVT (28-30 mil) | $8.99 - $12.99 / sq ft | Pet households, designer looks |
| Rigid waterproof core (SPC/WPC) | $9.99 - $13.99 / sq ft | Best for slab homes and flood-prone rooms |
Subfloor leveling and removal of your existing flooring are included in every quote - no surprise add-ons.
Vinyl Flooring - frequently asked questions
Yes - all the LVP, LVT, and sheet vinyl we sell is 100% waterproof, which matters here more than in most places. You can mop it, spill on it, and install it in basements and low-lying rooms without worrying about swelling or warping.
LVP is waterproof; laminate is not. LVP is also softer and quieter underfoot. Laminate is slightly more scratch-resistant on the surface. For bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere near the water table, LVP is the safer call.
Often yes - if the existing floor is flat, well-bonded, and not too deeply textured. We'll assess during the free in-home estimate and either install directly over it or level the surface first.
Quality LVP with a UV-protected wear layer holds its color for decades, even through humid summers. Cheaper builder-grade vinyl in a south-facing room can fade in a few years - one reason we buy direct from mills instead of selling the bottom of the market.
