Stair carpet installation in Hampton Roads
Stairs are the loudest, slipperiest, and hardest-working part of any house. A properly installed carpeted stair runner or wall-to-wall carpet solves all three problems at once - quieter footsteps, a softer landing if anyone slips, and a finish that hides the wear of daily traffic.
Barry's Carpet & Flooring has installed carpeted staircases across Hampton Roads for more than 65 years, from older homes in Ghent, Larchmont, and Colonial Place with narrower original stairs to the wide open staircases common in newer Chesapeake and Virginia Beach construction. Our own employed crew handles layout, padding, tackless strips, and finishing details - waterfall vs. Hollywood wrap, custom nosing caps, custom binding - so every stair lines up cleanly with no visible seams.

Wall-to-wall vs. stair runner - which is right?
Wall-to-wall carpet covers the full tread and riser. It's the warmest, quietest, and most pet-friendly option, and it's the easiest to keep clean because there are no exposed edges to scuff.
A stair runner leaves the outer edge of each tread exposed and looks beautiful on staircases with painted risers or open balusters. Runners are typically 27" or 32" wide with custom-bound edges in a matching or contrasting tape.
- Low-pile nylon - best durability for high-traffic stairs
- Wool-blend runners - premium look, naturally stain-resistant
- Solution-dyed polyester - best for households with pets and kids
- Custom binding in 30+ colors to match your trim

Apply for financingWhy so many Hampton Roads families carpet their stairs
Stairs take more daily abuse than almost any other surface in the house, and a quality carpet installation absorbs 22-35 decibels of impact noise, gives kids and older relatives a softer landing, and takes the edge off a barefoot trip down in the middle of the night. If you've got a dog that struggles with traction on a turn or a landing, carpeted stairs solve that overnight. It's also one of the easiest upgrades to time around a move - we hear from a lot of Naval Station Norfolk families who want the stairs redone right before or right after a PCS.

How we install carpet on stairs
We start by removing the old carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip and inspecting what's underneath. Loose treads get re-secured; squeaks get addressed on the spot. Then we install fresh 8-pound rebond padding, tackless strips along each tread and riser, and stretch the carpet with a knee kicker and power stretcher so it holds tight for years. Every seam is heat-bonded - no visible joints, no fraying at the nosing.

Carpet stair pricing in Hampton Roads
Pricing below is per stair, materials and labor included. A typical Hampton Roads home has 13-16 stairs.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard nylon carpet, wall-to-wall | $55 - $85 per stair | Most common choice |
| Premium nylon / stain-resistant | $80 - $115 per stair | Pet- and kid-friendly |
| Wool-blend runner | $110 - $165 per stair | Custom-bound edges |
| Berber loop carpet | $65 - $95 per stair | Skip if you have cats |
Final price depends on stair count, what we're removing, and any pad upgrade. Free in-home measure, no obligation, and we'll beat any written apples-to-apples quote.
Carpet Stairs - frequently asked questions
Low-pile nylon and solution-dyed polyester. Both shrug off the constant friction stairs see day after day. We steer people away from plush, deep-pile carpet on stairs - it crushes quickly right at the nosing.
It hides them visually, but we fix them properly first. Every loose tread gets re-secured and any open joints get addressed before new carpet goes down - that's true whether it's a brand-new staircase in Chesapeake or an original one in Ghent.
In almost every case, yes. Norfolk has a lot of housing stock with original staircases, and we inspect the structure first, re-secure anything loose, and build the new carpet installation on a solid, quiet base.
It holds up well and looks great, but we'd steer you away from it if you have cats - the loops snag easily on claws, especially on a high-traffic stair.
